Everything You Need to Know About Performing Stakeouts

Essential Insights for Understanding Stakeouts

What Is a Stakeout?

A stakeout involves waiting at a designated location for a pre-determined amount of time to observe whether the subject or a resident is present and available to accept service of process.

The specific details—such as the time, date, duration, and the individual to be served—will vary for each stakeout and clarified each time one is requested.

Do I Have to Perform Stakeouts?

No, it is always up to you. If you are comfortable performing a specific stakeout, then you are welcome to agree if offered one. Otherwise, you are always welcome to decline, which has no impact on your Scorecard or measurements of your success as a process server.

Will I See Stakeouts in Available Jobs?

No, because Stakeouts require specific information, the job will only show in your app if an ABC Legal employee reaches out and you accept the job.

Do I Log Attempts for a Stakeout?

Yes, you will log an attempt in 30-minute intervals, either until the maximum time limit is reached or the documents are successfully served, whichever occurs first.

I Completed the Stakeout, What Now?

If you've completed the Stakeout (whether you successfully served it or was unsuccessful), reach out to the stakeout coordinator that arranged the stakeout to ensure the job is resolved and add any agreed upon pay.

I Ran into an Issue During the Stakeout, What Do I Do?

Contact the stakeout coordinator that arranged the stakeout to determine the best course of action.

Will I Get Paid Differently for a Stakeout?

Payment will be issued according to the rate established by the stakeout coordinator prior to confirming the assignment.
